CIRCA
6 August, 2009 - 31 August, 2009

"Not since James Thiérée's Au Revoir Parapluie, and Les 7 Doigts de la Main's Traces, has the UK seen a circus show quite so knee-tremblingly sexy, beautiful and moving. 4/5 Stars."

- The Guardian, UK, July 2009

CIRCA is a new work created for 7 performers from three of Circa’s in-repertoire works – The Space Between, by the light of stars that are no longer... and FURIOSO.

Over 80 intense minutes, the performers move from highly connected acrobatic and tumbling sequences, through fast-paced intricate scenes, finishing with the hauntingly beautiful closing scenes of by the light of stars that are no longer... Circa’s signature style – combining poetic physical beauty, extraordinary circus skills and an immersive use of sound, light and projection – is a thoroughly new kind of circus which is at once poetic, sensual and immense.

CIRCA has recently concluded its season at Riverside Studios in London, and will soon be performed at Assembly Hall as part of Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August.

FURIOSO
21 July, 2009 - 26 July, 2009

“FURIOSO lives up to the high standards we’ve come to expect from this Brisbane-based company... From somersaults and back-flips, to contortions and acrobatic leaps, the three men and two women performers succeed in mesmerising for the entire hour and 15 minutes of the piece...

But it is the poetic resonance and emotional charge of the work that makes it more than just another circus performance. Bypassing any rational narrative and appealing directly to our aesthetic senses, Furioso suggests our fragile human existence is fraught with violence, as we suffer at the hands of some invisible, malevolent force.”

A physically astonishing piece for 5 performers, the work explores the shape and form of fury.  Explosive encounters, dynamic group scenes and achingly beautiful solos abound in a show described as being ”more than circus. It’s art.”

Created by Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa Ensemble, FURIOSO seamlessly combines extreme circus skills with dance, movement, lighting and a magnificent contemporary string soundtrack.

Circa recently performed FURIOSO to a sold out season at Galway International Arts Festival.

by the light of stars that are no longer...
27 June, 2009 - 28 June, 2009

"Observing the stars we experience an emptiness that is not our own”

by the light of stars that are no longer… combines Circa’s physical virtuosity with a haunting soundtrack (featuring works by MUM, Sigor Ros, DJ Shadow and Leonard Cohen) and startling use of projected light. by the light of stars that are no longer… is a hauntingly beautiful work suffused with longing and wonder.

Circa’s premiere season of it's new work by the light of stars that are no longer… played to near capacity houses for the four night season at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

The response to the show was overwhelmingly positive from audiences and critics alike.

ABC reviewer Nigel Munro-Wallis writes:

by the light of stars that are no longer... is a concept and a show that really has to be seen to be appreciated. No amount of words could really describe what happens or the range of emotions one feels in watching such an ensemble do such incredible things with their bodies. As I said, the emotional journey one is taken on is quite something and, I suspect, very subjective. I feel fairly confident that each and every audience member on the evening I attended would have got something quite different out of the experience but that is indeed the beauty and artistry of the piece.
